Privacy Policy.
Effective July 9, 2026
This policy explains what information CaptureBear ("CaptureBear", "we", "us") handles, and what happens to it. We have tried to keep it short, specific, and honest. If anything here is unclear, email support@capturebear.com.
The short version
- CaptureBear is a local-first Mac app. Capturing, styling, annotating, and exporting all happen on your Mac.
- There are no accounts, and the app contains no analytics or tracking.
- Your screenshots never reach our servers unless you explicitly use the optional Analysis feature.
- Optional uploads go to your own storage bucket, using credentials that never leave your Mac.
- Our website sets no cookies and runs no ad trackers.
Information stored on your Mac
The app keeps its working data locally, under your control, including: your styling preferences and settings, your most recent screenshot (so you can reopen it), your upload history, your storage credentials if you configure uploads, and a local cache of Analysis results. This data stays on your device. We cannot see it, and deleting the app's data or the app itself removes it.
Optional feature: uploads to your own storage
You can connect CaptureBear to an S3-compatible storage bucket that you own (for example Cloudflare R2 or Amazon S3). When you export or drop a file on the menu bar icon, the file travels directly from your Mac to your storage provider over an encrypted connection. Your access credentials are stored locally on your Mac and are never sent to us. We do not receive, store, or relay your files; your relationship with your storage provider is governed by their terms. Remember that files uploaded to a public bucket are reachable by anyone who has the link.
Optional feature: screenshot Analysis
If you explicitly run Analysis on a screenshot, the image is sent over an encrypted connection to our analysis service, which processes it in memory and forwards it to Anthropic, our AI provider, to identify the visible interface components and text. The structured result is returned to your Mac and cached locally so re-analyzing the same image never requires another request.
- We do not store your images or the analysis results on our servers; processing is transient.
- Anthropic processes the image as our subprocessor. Under its commercial API terms, Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
- Analysis never runs automatically — images are only sent when you invoke the feature.
Purchases and licensing
When you buy a license, payment is handled by our payment processor (Stripe); we never see your full payment details. We receive and keep what is needed to deliver and support your license: your email address, your license key and its status, and basic purchase records we are legally required to retain.
Website
capturebear.com is a static website hosted by Vercel. It sets no cookies and includes no advertising or cross-site trackers. Like nearly every website, our hosting provider produces short-lived server logs (such as IP address, user agent, and requested URL) used for operations and abuse prevention.
Support
If you email us, we receive whatever you choose to send, and we keep the correspondence for as long as it is useful for helping you and improving CaptureBear.
Legal bases
Where the GDPR or similar laws apply, we process personal data to perform our contract with you (delivering licenses, providing the Analysis feature, answering support), to pursue our legitimate interests (securing and operating our services), and, where required, with your consent.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone except: the service providers named above (Anthropic for Analysis, Stripe for payments, Vercel for website hosting), professional advisers where necessary, and authorities when the law genuinely requires it. Our current list of subprocessors is always at capturebear.com/legal/subprocessors.
International transfers
Our service providers operate primarily in the United States. Where personal data is transferred from the EEA, the UK, or similar jurisdictions, we rely on recognized safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy framework applicable to the provider.
Retention
Screenshots submitted to Analysis are not retained by us at all. License and purchase records are kept for the life of your license plus any legally required accounting period. Support email is kept while it remains useful. Everything the app stores locally is retained only on your Mac, for as long as you keep it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or export the personal data we hold about you, and to object to certain processing. Because we hold so little — typically your email, license record, and any support correspondence — exercising these rights is usually quick. Email support@capturebear.com and we will respond within 30 days. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children
CaptureBear is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a material way, we will update the date above and note the change prominently on this page. Significant changes affecting license holders will also be announced by email where we have one on file.
